Aluminium 6082 T6 Sheet
6082-T6 aluminum sheet is a heat-treatable aluminum alloy with magnesium and silicon as its main alloying elements. It combines medium strength with excellent processing performance and is widely used in mechanical manufacturing and structural engineering fields.
T6 aluminum alloy is a heat-treatable forged alloy in the 6xxx series, characterized by a balanced combination of strength, corrosion resistance, and formability, making it a preferred sheet material for structural and high-stress applications.
When in the T6 temper, 6082 aluminum alloy undergoes solution heat treatment and artificial aging. It has a minimum yield strength of 260 MPa, a tensile strength of 310 MPa, while maintaining good ductility (elongation ≥ 8%) and machinability.
Its chemical composition mainly consists of aluminum, with 0.7–1.3% silicon, 0.6–1.2% magnesium, and up to 1% manganese, forming a fine-grained microstructure that provides good corrosion resistance in both atmospheric and marine environments.
6082 T6 is widely used in sheet thicknesses from 0.4 mm to 6 mm (and thick plates up to 12.5 mm in thickness), and is extensively applied in transportation frames, bridges, trusses, ship components, beer barrels, and general machining billets. This alloy complies with EN 485-2, EN 573-3, EN 754-2, and ISO 6361 standards, and can be easily welded, anodized, and formed using conventional processes.

Aluminium 6082 T6 Sheet Heat Treatment and Tempering
- T6 Temper: Solution treatment at approximately 530 °C, quenching, then aging for several hours at around 175 °C to precipitate Mg₂Si.

Aluminium 6082 T6 Sheet Processing Characteristics
- Machinability: Excellent in T6 temper, producing tight chips and good chip break. Performs better than 6061 in sheet processing, making it a preferred choice for CNC parts.
- Weldability: Good TIG/MIG weldability, though the strength in the Heat Affected Zone (HAZ) may decrease. Recommended fillers: 4043 for autogenous welding, 5356 for joining with 7005 alloy.
- Cold Forming: Limited suitability. Sharp bends or 90° folds are prone to cracking. Techniques such as heating, radius bending, or grain straightening can help mitigate the issue.
- Surface Treatment: Suitable for anodizing (excluding clear coating), powder coating, and polishing.

- Weld Zone Defects: Requires careful filler selection and post-weld treatment
- Cold Forming Challenges: Prone to cracking if not preheated or formed using special techniques
- Temperature Sensitivity: Strength decreases above 200°C, limiting its use in high-temperature applications
6082-T6 aluminium sheet is highly suitable for high-stress, corrosion-prone environments where strength and lightweight properties are critical.
